About this collection

WACs at Fort Ritchie in formation

A unit of the Women's Army Corps was stationed at Fort Ritchie, Maryland after World War II. This collection shows the women in the unit from 1966 to 1974. Some photographs show women enlisting, receiving promotions, and accepting honorable discharges. A few women are highlighted as WAC of the month over the course of the years. Other awards, such as Unit of the Month, or Best Driver award, are shown too. The women are seen hard at work around the fort, doing a variety of tasks like cooking, marching, and driving. Several sports games were photographed, including basketball, softball, and volleyball games against other Forts. A small portion of the collection gives a glimpse at the inside of the buildings where the women lived. Many of these women later went on to work in Germany, Japan, or Vietnam. The WACs disbanded in 1978 and were then integrated with the male units of the army.
